I just want to add that Fazi is very much out on a limb in terms of progressive politics in the UK. All the progressive parties - Plaid, the SNP, the Greens - are in favour of Rejoin. Listen to Zack here. I remember how excited I was listening to this when Zack made this statement last year. Even Ed Davey of the Lib Dems (the most pro-European of the three legacy parties) had been very cagey about rejoining. As the description to the linked video says, "And just like that, the Green Party have leapfrogged the LibDems". I don't think you fully grasp how much of a disaster Brexit has been, how it harmed the working class, and how it is seen to have been a disaster; only the true believers and Farage still believe in it. Previously eurosceptic parties in Europe, including on the left, have softened their stance as a result of seeing the economic and political damage that Brexit has caused the UK. A majority of British people now favour Rejoin according to YouGov. All the promises of Brexit lie in ashes. Why wouldn't people vote to Rejoin? And the desire to rejoin is overwhelming among the young. 83 percent of 16-24 year olds would vote to rejoin in a referendum according to an ITV poll earlier this year. This is not surprising. It was the rights and freedoms and opportunities of youngsters that were taken away by the elderly in the 2016 referendum. Were there another referendum, everyone knows that the young would grab the chance to reclaim those rights. If you are going to say to them that they should forgo these rights, you need to put forward a pretty convincing argument. Surely, politics should be about expanding peoples rights and freedoms and opportunities, not curtailing them. That is why I insisted that Fazi needs to go into specifics, because it is the specifics that people have to live with. Finally, I want to say that my multiple identities include being English, British, and European. When Britain left the EU I felt something like grief. It was no use Brexiteers saying "we're not leaving Europe, just the EU" - it did feel as though we were waving goodbye to our neighbours. There are some of us for whom this will be a festering wound until Britain repairs its relationship to Europe. ![]() |
