Perhaps my phrasing was clumsy, though you do leave me feeling I must explain the word "if."

I certainly did not say that recognizing Zionism as racism "entails" denying the UK's role in creating the state of Israel. If my first sentence is open to that interpretation (I would claim that is a strained reading), surely my second sentence is unamibiguous. I am conceding the value of such recognition, even if -- as may or may not be the case in any given set of circumstances -- what I regard as an important further step, the critique of the role of the UK (and the US and the other European allies, certainly in particular France, who dictated policy in the wake of WWII) in creating the current disaster is not taken.

Similarly I think my contention, and that of Fazi and Streeck, is not that the project of a European Union necessarily from its inception could not have been carried out consistently with democratic principles, but rather that (beginning at least with Maastricht) it in fact was not.

You write: "Ultimately, the Commission reflects the ideology of the elected national governments, and must bend to their will." The Romanian example (I believe Fazi's Compact Magazine piece on this is paywalled, but the discussion linked below from his Substack perhaps covers the same ground), at least in Fazi's view, calls this into question.

hugzu ;-p
