Okay, possibly a bit niche, and if you're not interested then ignore this post, but I just listened to Ashok Kumar being interviewed on Novara Media, and the guy is amazing. Kumar is from Greens for Palestine, the group behind the ZiR (Zionism is racism) motion, and the discussion was about strategy; and I love what Kumar said, and how critical he was as well about Novara Media itself. He is quite right about the two paths that lie before the Greens - in one they become like the Lib Dems, very Westminster focussed, anxious to maintain a certain number of MPs, who largely exist to further their own parliamentary careers. The other strategy is one of changing the whole national conversation through confrontation. It is the strategy of Farage, of Mélenchon, and is largely the strategy that Zack has followed as well. We have seen the chasm open up between the membership and the MPs over the ZiR motion, the MPs interested in the Lib Dem path and making the occasional speech in the House of Commons, and congratulating themselves on their reasonableness - and being completely inconsequential. It is a path for the Greens that I have zero interest in. Kumar has crystalised a lot of stuff that I've been thinking. What he says about political strategy reminds me of the philosopher A. J. Ayer's description of Sorel as "a moment of glory, a spanner in the works". Also, discussions on Novara Media tend to be somewhat sedate, but Kumar is wonderfully fiery. I love him! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqEjiFrTOaQ (27 minutes) ![]() |
