I've been feeling kind of down of late -- some nagging health problems that keep me in constant, low-level pain (nothing too serious and I'm told if I am patient things will improve, but still...), the world is going to hell, and I've had to deal with a number of petty but aggravating RL hassles. The days are getting shorter; temperatures are dropping -- all the ingredients in place for that bleak, aww f*ck it! sense. Anyway, I drove the longish drive today to the nearest Costco where they typically have something I need at a fraction of the price one would pay on-line or at a nearer store. Well, they just ran out -- they hope to have some more in stock next week. GRRR So as I'm listlessly wheeling my cart towards the food aisles to stock up on their ridiculously oversized packages of things I might need, I see a boy with his mother. Now this boy wasn't particularly cute -- not my "type" as they say -- on the chubby side and a bit below my AOA. But when I'm out and about, I notice ALL boys -- from little tykes just emerging from babyhood to youngish-looking college freshmen -- even if they are on either side of my middle school sweet spot or can't boast much in the looks department. So of course I notice this boy. And he notices that I notice him. He is swinging around his head some black bag -- might be his mother's purse. His face lights up and we both grin at each other for ten seconds or so. He lets the bag fall to his side, grin still plastered to his face. I can just feel the oxytocin flood my system. Presto: mopey, "down" feelings disappear. And I'm happy. (I like to think maybe he was too -- if only for a minute or two.) There - I've done it. Found the cure for depression. BOYS!! SR ![]() |
