But you always insist it's not a valid concept. So I guess I gave up on trying to explain it to you. You point out how children are different from adults, so treating them differently isn't adultism. Well maybe, but society takes that concept too far. Children are treated more like beasts than people. Society has nonsensical notions that kids are too immature for plenty of things they're actually mature enough for. And honestly, even when the majority of kids aren't mature enough, not everyone matures at the same rate. Adultism is a denial of the diversity of humanity. And sometimes people will recognise that some kids are sufficiently mature, but still support paternalistic subjugation because of some kind of precautionary principle utilitarian stuff. But it is a misuse of the precautionary principle, similar to anti-vax. Autonomy, including its risks, are beneficial to everyone, including children. They worry about the danger of autonomy, but what about the danger of subjugation? It's just so ironic that they argue against autonomy for children on the grounds of preventing child abuse. The denial of children's autonomy really just enables abuse. Paternalistic control is a particularly harmful form of abuse. It's seems clear that the concept of liberty just doesn't apply to children in the minds of most people like it does to adults. Worse, liberty is twisted into parental rights, which means it entails the right of parents to abuse their children. |
