You're probably thinking of the classic Eeling Comedy "Tea For Two" (1942) (the first of the many postwar comedies about eels, c.f. "Kind Hearts and Congers," "The Lady with the Lamprey," etc.). The plot - as I'm sure you know - centres around a city bank clerk and his wife who try to escape rising sea levels in Wapping by building an ark and reducing their carbon footprint. While Viv attempts to keep the Thames out of their flat by growing her own cale and having a lot of sex with tradesmen, her husband Tom is shepherding hippos and giraffes out of London Zoo and trying to write The Waste Land. These days of course the film is best remembered for Dame Edith Evans' magnificent performance as an ascerbic dowager aunt disparanging the efforts of the East London working class to protect their livelihood against an inexorable global catastrophe. Who could forget her famous delivery of the line, "a SAND-BAG???" There is also, regrettably, the more recent remake by Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro as "T42: ICE'd Tea" (2025), which translates the premise to Scottsdale Arizona, and substitutes a global flood for a tide of undocumented workers. Although largely forgotten by history, boylovers will assuredly remember this one for a protracted scene where Immigration and Customs Director Chad Tetrappenis (Kieren Culkin) carries out a lengthy internal exmination of an eleven-year-old Honduran illegal (uncredited), before deciding that the boy is clearly enjoying the examination way too much and subsequently throwing him out of a helicopter. Though initially unrecognised by the academy, the film went on to win 14 FIFA Film Awards, and Keir Starmer described it as "good." |
