The world is full of supportive friendly people who would like nothing more than to visit with you over a cup of tea and talk about everything under the sun. Or a beer. Or a joint. Whatever you are into, other people who live in your local neighborhood are into that too. You aren't that unique. Church would be a great starting point, even if you aren't necessarily religious you can get a lot out of joining a church family. There are also many charities and volunteer groups near you. People gather together to enjoy music, share hobbies, shared gardens and kid oriented activities always need chaperones. There is no better way to get to know your neighbors and make them friends, than by serving your community with them. Volunteering can be hard and stressful, but it's going through shared activities together that allows you to get to know each other. Stress reveals who we are behind the public mask we wear, and letting down our guard to ask for help and getting help, even for something as trivial as being in the weeds selling hotdogs at the Little League intermission, leads to comradery. You have to put yourself out there to make friends. Be a friend. Actually try. But don't go volunteer at the local prison, talk about how you're having a fine life and then get offended when they can't relate. Yes you need to work harder at avoiding this place. This place is toxic and poisonous. The only thing BC is good for these days is being a prickly reminder that this isn't it. ![]() |
