'Legal and social aspects of pedophilia,' an address given by Edward Brongersma. Dr. Edward Brongersma speaks on pedophilia: "Legal and social aspects of pedophilia: an international perspective." History Corner 034. Sponsored by GLAS and the Gay and Lesbian Law Students' Association., March 8, 1984 Edward Brongersma was a Dutch senator and jurist who spent decades advocating for the decriminalization of pedophilia and adult-child sexual relationships. He had previously served 11 months in a Dutch prison in 1950 for violating age-of-consent laws. His appearance on campus later sparked severe backlash from student publications and conservative groups on campus. Critics cited his lecture as an example of inappropriate student-group activity and heavily criticized the university for allowing student-allocated funds to support events associated with his platform. * 1950 Conviction Basis: He was convicted under Article 248bis of the Dutch Criminal Code (which regulated the age of consent for homosexual contacts, later abolished in 1971 with Brongersma's help as a senator). * Subsequent Controversy: The event was later heavily cited by conservative student publications and groups protesting student-fund allocations.
