Everywhere you go, there you are, and that goes for all of the characters you see here plus a 1000 times more. Every time people have ever fled their homeland to set up utopian communities they bring their horrible institutions with them. The US pilgrims (in addition to the issue you brought up of slaughtering everyone in the new place) turned on each other with horrible violence and manipulations worse than the situation they'd fled in Europe. A perfect example is the nation of Liberia in Africa, settled by freed slaves after the US civil war. The first things the (black) American settlers did was set up slavery again with themselves as the masters this time and the natives as their slaves. That's how people think. "Now WE will be in charge!" The floating island does have the benefit of not requiring mass murder and genocide to make the space, but imagine the first town meeting someone starts making announcements and a hand goes up. It's you know hoot, quibbling about some insignificant aspect of the announcement, and it quickly becomes very apparent that his vision of paradise is a place where the authorities are unable to have any sort of productive dialogue with group, and he's not alone. By making the group entyrely out of rejects, you'll get a lot of hooting fools in the mix. Not to mention perverts and predators. When you scrape the 0.001% most persecuted people all in one place you will certainly find out that a number of them were persecuted for a reason. Any laws or rules about treating children with dignity and civility would quibbled to the bone by people like the pro-c we have here at BC, meanwhile the rules would be ignored by selfish (autistic?) people who don't care what the rules are. The only way it MIGHT work is if it was thoroughly monitored by very advanced flock cameras watching every nook and cranny of the island, recording every conversation. With advancements in ai the island could be patrolled by robot bouncers who could quickly converge on the scene whenever someone gets out of line. It would probably be nice to live on a free island, working the crab trap boats or doing whatever it is that island people do. It would be nice to not have to worry about bullies who violate norms with no consequences here on the mainland. Everyone who goes to an island like that probably pictures themselves as the one being protected, but then they get there and they are being firmly chaperoned worse than they ever had it in their homeland. Probably that (firm ai robot chaperones for kids) is what we need in the world at large eventually.
