Just for the sake of accuracy, neither Rudi van Dantzig, the author of the source novel, nor the screenwriters (Don Bloch and director Roeland Kerbosch), appeared in the movie itself.

I have not been able to find any evidence of van Dantzig being involved in the movie production at all, beyond supplying the original story from which the film's narrative was heavily adapted; though the director has said that he knew van Dantzig "quite well".

The young actor who played Jeroen was Maarten Smit (the character he played was Jeroen Boman), who did not go on to have an acting career. (He was approached by Disney, of all companies, but was not interested in further acting.)

The adult version of Jeroen was played by Jeroen Aart Krabbé, and he has had a very successful career in film.

Andrew Kelly played the Canadian soldier Walt. He was nervous in the sex scene, and young Maarten had to help him with it!

Some of the above information comes from the interview with the director linked below.
