or Joshua Tree, Canyon Lands, or Capitol Reef national parks. They do have wildlife but because these places are so dry, for the most part you either don't see the wildlife since it's largely nocturnal, or is not particularly lovely (e.g., jackrabbits; rattlesnakes.) But the scenery is SPECTACULAR - in fact, I would go so far as to argue that the scenery of the Colorado Plateau (which includes the Grand Canyon) is perhaps the most spectacular on earth. While I have spent a fair amount of time in your lovely land (lived in London some decades ago for a few months) and much of the scenery -- e.g., the Scottish Highlands, the Lake Country -- does indeed qualify as lovely, I wouldn't call it SPECTACULAR in the manner of the scenery of the American Southwest (while we're at it, the scenery of Vermont in the autumn is just about as lovely as anything one can see on your scepter'd isle.) And if you do make it to the desert lands of the American Southwest, be sure to visit New Mexico and try some of the indigenous cuisine there (particularly recommend huevos rancheros smothered in Hatch Valley red chile) Some of the best food on earth, and while it's not steak and kidney pie or bubble and squeak, it's very tasty in it own way. Same can be said for what you can find in and around New Orleans and the Cajun country or the Tidewater South (ever had she-crab soup? Now there is a LOVELY dish!) SR ![]() |
