The problem is that the war against Nature, both within and without, is necessary to creating a civilisation. The West has shown that rapacious, earth-plundering capitalism can improve the lot of hard-scrabble man. Biologically, that's a no-brainer, we'll go for it every time.

But I also agree with you and we could do with a lot more of your appreciation of our "tiny blue-green dot." Although it has to be sans politics to be useful.

For a more Nature-savvy approach, I like John Michael Greer, a wonderfully brilliant druid and occultist. He insists, compellingly, that it's all up for the industrialised world once fossil fuels run out. No alternative energy source will ever replace the free-lunch that hydrocarbons give us. Population will have to shrink dramatically. Internets and AI and airplanes will disappear without a trace.

It's kinda terrifying and comforting.

There are no accidents, only nature throwing her weight around. Even the bomb merely releases energy that nature has put there. Nuclear war would be just a spark in the grandeur of space. Nor can radiation “alter” nature: she will absorb it all. After the bomb, nature will pick up the cards we have spilled, shuffle them, and begin her game again. Nature is forever playing solitaire with herself.

You know who.
