Well, human culture is very variable and malleable, and the fact that belief in an ethic of enviromental care is possible is shown by the fact that some people do believe in it, for example, myself. There have even been cultures and subcultures that have practiced such an ethic. For example, Gandhi says somewhere that when he was a kid his parents had a horror of even swatting an insect, so he was very much brought up with an ethic of non-injury (ahimsa) towards life.

True, humans have more often tended to be horrible to animals. The Sun King enjoyed the burning of live cats in bonfires. As the cats screamed his entire court would experience fits of laughter. It is rather hard now to recover the mentality that could take pleasure in this, but then Christian Europe was hardly what one would call civilised.

As for astrology, when I was a youngling I would read out my family members' weekly horoscopes from magazines for sheer amusement. I was always disappointed by their vagueness. I was longing to one day read something like
Taurus
On Wednesday, you'll win the Lottery. On Friday you'll be involved in a hideous industrial accident involving your genitals being drawn into machinery, from which you will die over the following weekend. Lucky number: 6
Sadly, it never happened. I once had my fortune told by a Tarot card reader at a fair. Complete waste of a tenner. It was so dull I don't even remember what she said. I think the cards that were drawn for me were The Hermit, The Hanged Man, and The Man With His Genitals Caught In Industrial Machinery, and she explained concerning this last that it was a common misconception that it spelt misfortune, when in fact it can be quite lucky. Something like that.
