If you were a consultant hired by the FS moderation committee and faced with the plethora of (pseudonymous) "characters," trolls, perverts and two faced #DOSSIER building predators who have warmly welcomed and then betrayed generation after generation of curious visitors to the site, would you rather the moderators crack down on the "negativity" like the Catholic Church welcoming in wave after wave of parishioners in hopes that the blessings of the institution will be of enough utilitarian value (win more souls or whatever) to outweigh the harms that come along with not publicly addressing the abuses of the past and the fact that those abusers are still among us, or would you rather the institution become a roiling cesspit of stinking filth, the stink of which keeps would be parishioners safe as they keep their distance or put on protective safety gear before entering? BC is not like a Catholic Church with one overarching definition of what it means to have one's soul saved. It/they/we are more like the Protestant Churches with wildly differing conceptions of salvation, each sect defining evil by describing other sects and treating "others" as dehumanized evil outsiders. One sect defines pedophile purity by saying only those who center the pedophile's sexual lust as "our" defining characteristic, while other sects center children's dignity and human rights as the definition of "love" and still other sects prefer to see the institution as part of an ancient historical tradition or just one more front in the culture war between Republicans and Democrats. How exactly could a moderation team make this site desirable for the types of people who you wish to commune with? You wouldn't be alone if your vision includes kicking out those who don't share your vision or definitions of key concepts, but again in an anonymous/pseudonymous environment that's easier said than done and it leads to some of the same toxic aspects (e.g. #DOSSIER building control freaks) that have led to such suffering in the past. When our resident friend of the FSCO builds systems to monitor and identify threats to the site, all it takes is for a mole to act charming for the 6-12 months it takes to gain his trust (and the login code) and then that mole set on doxing and taking down people on the "other side" could use that same system to monitor and identity targets for prosecution, harassment or other, even possibly violent attacks. It's easy to say that FS moderation has shot themselves in the foot, but none of us knows what might have become of BC with a more hands on governance. It might be that the largely hands-off, staying out of it approach, and lack of a web master, has been BC's saving grace. Looking out at the smoking wreckage of what was once a mighty website might lead you to ask "at what cost?" but at least BC is still here, while all of the other popular boylove sites have gone the way of the dodo. ![]() |
