self-discipline for Restriction or Enrichment??

i think that that's what it "boils down to". And your dichotomy seems false. Few, you think, have the "self-discipline" necessary to cheerfully ignore such people? But what if we "Turn the Tables" on that one, so to speak. Have the Self-Discipline to proceed ENRICHINGLY instead of RESTRICTIVELY!! (realizing the value!) Thus learning, sometimes, that "ugly ducklings" have Beautiful Swan potentials!! By Restrictive approaches, no one would EVER learn of such a potential. Metaphorically speaking, of course!
