A possible disturbing trend in Australia

At present the Lower House (House of Representatives) in Australia has the Labor Party with a commanding absolute majority over the other parties,

Different story in the Upper House (Senate) where Labor has a tiny majority but needs the support of others to get legislation passed.

Now in recent weeks, polls are showing an extraordinary surge of support for a very minor party called One Nation. This party began several years ago and its main policy was to slow down or stop immigration.

It appalled many as it was blatantly racist. And it still is in spite of feeble denials. It has attracted some of Australia's weirdest politicians who have left main parties to join

The polls have predicted an absolute wipeout at the next election for the Coalition, 2 parties similar to the UK's Conservative Party to be replaced largely by One Nation.

Australia has become very multi-cultural with more racial harmony than most. But if the polls are correct, and I do have serious doubts, the very nature of the country could change.

I cannot forget Hitler's successful bid to become Chancellor in Germany being based significantly on the population's dissatisfaction with everything.

Could Australia go down this road? I don't think so and I sure hope I'm right.
