I seem to have a knack of causing you offence and I'm truly sorry for it. I think my posts, whilst sometimes being mischievous or ironic in tone (which sometimes doesn't translate well across the Atlantic - there really is a distinct difference of idiom between British English and American English), are not nearly as venomous as those of many other contributors that you feel are worthy of response. I disagree profoundly with many of your core philosophical views, such as your looking to Christianity for social salvation and your belief that a non religious view is life-denying. I am also deeply opposed to your political views which I see as incongruent with some of your moralistic language. But I have never intended any personal animosity, and don't feel any. I was earlier hoping to stimulate a discussion about the nature of the nihilism that you take to be inherent in secular society, since I actually regard myself as very much in favour of life, except I believe that what matters is the flourishing of life and not just its quantity which is suggested by your opposition to abortion and concern with fertility - which you'll no doubt also feel is a slur and offensive. But discussion of these issues, whilst it won't necessarily lead to agreement, might well help to illuminate the nature of these philosophical disagreements, which I think would be intellectually useful. For this reason, I am sorry that you don't feel able to engage with me. If you still feel that way then that is of course your choice. I've done the best I can. ![]() |
