Assassination works --or not.

Sometimes assassins get what they aimed for. John Wilkes Booth is a case in point. We can't be sure, but had Lincoln lived, it's quite possible that Reconstruction would not have taken the ugly turn it did. Lincoln's replacement by a weak Southern Confederate sympathizer helped lay the groundwork for what happened. More recently, the assassination of Shinzo Abe seems to have accomplished precisely what the assassin intended. The control that Abe's faction had over the Liberal Democratic Party was ended and the LDP itself may finally lose its grip on power after Abe seemed to have restored it. Even more to the point, the assassination exposed the links between the LDP and the Moonies, the far right Korean cult. The Moonie influence over Japanese politics is probably finished. That's what the assassin wanted. But sometimes things work out in precisely opposite directions from what the assassin(s) wanted. Brutus and Cassius sought to forestall one-man rule. How well did that work out? Meanwhile, the Charlie Kirk assassination is a political gift to Trump (as was the attempted assassination of Trump last fall).
