I have to go off to work now, but I read the first two chapters and I have to say that I am so looking forward to reading further. I generally do enjoy memoirs (at least the interesting ones!) and this is already a superb read. Not only fascinating (with, it has to be admitted, some superficial similarities to my own childhood), but it is SO well written; really beautiful prose. A friend recently suggested I might enjoy Keith McNally's recent memoir 'I Regret Almost Everything', and actually it was pretty good (though somewhat tautologous, a little overlong, nowhere near as well written as 'Tomkins' ', and, I fear, slightly didactic at times). Most interesting to me were his affairs with a fellow actor when he was cast as Ronnie Winslow in 'The Winslow Boy', and with Alan Bennett who fell in love with him when Keith was a teenager (and rightly so - one of the photos, of Keith on his first trip abroad, is labelled 'Me in Paris, aged 16, looking all of 12). Wholesome relationships, both - and, again, a great example of BL working as it should. I am slightly tempted to attempt to write my own modest memoirs as I genuinely think all of these RL testaments are vitally important (you know, as long as the world isn't going to end next week). Thanks again, Sharpy. |
