In the shape of my new family, David the very frail old man lets himself out the front door as he wants to go home and he is going to walk with his walker, he can't get the catch on the gate to work. I've seen a mug on his table saying "Best Dad In The World". I haven't noticed any visitors. His leg actually flexes like a bow as he walks and I don't know what he's concentrating on so hard. One step, three seconds, another step and it's all in dreadful slow motion. The nurse arrives, "What are you doing David?" "I want to go home." "You can't go out the gate, look you can walk along the patio, but you can't walk out there". Scene shift; in the dining room. I say "Fish and chips for tea", David says "From here?" "Yes". He concentrates all the time, hunched over the table, His eyes staring at infinity and directed at the table. The fish and chips arrive but not for David for he doesn't want it, he wants to go to his room. Warwick doesn't want chips, they go away to clear the chips off his plate. He starts humming to himself in an effort to bear it all. I'm not sure of the name of the man opposite me, he focuses on the table too. He likes to drink half his soup and break up his food with his hands and place it in his soup, I don't know why, and he slowly eats it with a spoon. He has some tattoos, one on his right arm indicates he probably was in the navy. I will ask him one day if he was. I went for a shower previously and he was standing in his plastic diapirs in his room, I entered the shower and I heard him raise his voice at me, I don't know what he said but I presumed he wanted the shower first. I came out of the shower and said "okay." As I walked away he said "Thank you!" He relies on a walker too. Back to the dining room. I look around me, old faces, men and women mostly women, No one really talking, they just try not to stare at me. I've got dark hair it probably reminds them of youth. What's he doing here? I don't know but I think I'm going to pop my clogs before you. They want to mother me I can tell. It was an exciting day what with the angry fire alarm at dawn. But the staff keep the routine going, breakfast, morning coffee, lunch the main meal, and tea time. Then the medication time at about 8 o'clock, and a "Goodnight coonigan". "Goodnight." Good, they never disturb me after meds, The night is mine. ![]() |
