youth should not be allowed to decide on puberty because they have never undergone it, depriving them of experiential evidence Don't get me wrong: my sentiments are with both of Sick Rose's marvellous contributions to this thread, which are, indeed, so eloquent that I have nothing to add; but I cannot help noting what an odd argument the above sentence fragment represents. We are all familiar with the ridiculous argument that because someone hasn't experienced x that means that they cannot consent to x. This is the first time I've read anyone argue that because someone hasn't experienced x that means that they are unable to withhold consent to x, and indeed that they are obliged to experience x. I fear it might have consequences that you might not have considered. For example, I've never been stripped naked before a live audience, strapped into a tall metal chair, and been tickled by having rotating feather dusters placed under my armpits, whilst simultaneously watching Carol Vorderman urinate on a first folio of Shakespeare's Collected Dramatic Works. Does this mean that I've no right to withold my consent to this experience? It seems a bit rough. ![]() |
