While things may have changed since then, it nonetheless represents an interesting historical account of TEFLing in Asia. (...) I saw no place to make a reply so i thought i should post this here. i learned some things about this topic from an ex-pat acquaintance who fled there from legal problems (he ran for his life from the u.s.a.) who also foolishly (he said) hung around with VERY naive and arrogantly ignorant u.s. tourists. Foolishly because such willfully ignorant N.Americans are well-known to bring troubles to those seeking to keep a low profile. Trouble which eventually got him discovered by u.s. authorities and had him forced back to the u.s. to serve the remainder of his sentence. To which, last i heard, he had finally served and then returned to Asia. The independently published book "The Poison River" by Steve Raymond brings this and related truths to the fore, for those of you who scoff at my painting of these situations as VERY problematic. Including how young people in dictatorial nations like Thailand are dealt when they join their boylover friends in challenging state "interests" (i.e. remaining obedient to the u.s. empire as long as they Must). That is, young people of the "Third World" simply do not have access to the privileges that Nice N.Americans have!! And the sooner BLs/MAPs get that thru their thick heads, the better!
