Re: Directors similar to Ivan Noel

When I intially read your question I hestitated to answer because I am not quite clear what you mean by directors "like" Iván Noel. "Like" in what respect? No director is quite like Iván Noel. Fortunately, Grenfield has supplied a very excellent list of directors of boycentric films. Nice to see Kiarostami get a mention, as well as a mention of Naderi's Davandeh / The Runner. I'd also mention Abolfazl Jalili as well. Grenfield mentioned Mohammad-Ali Talebi, and everyone should certainly see Bid o bad / Willow and Wind, which features a strikingly beautiful boy protagonist. What is it with Iranian directors and pretty boys? Talking of directors with a penchant for boys with striking looks, why not go for Pieter-Jan De Pue's The Land of the Enlightened? If I mention any further films here, these will just be random things that I think of just now because for some reason or other they have been on my mind. Of course, every devotee of the cinema of boyhood must see Yves Robert's La guerre des boutons, and also his duology La gloire de mon père and Le château de ma mere. La guerre des boutons was based on the novel of the same name, and the first screen adaptation of it was the 1936 film La guerre des gosses. It has been beautifully restored and released on blu-ray by Gaumont (available from French Amazon; check region codes if you are outside Europe). For non-Francophones, the disc doesn't have English subtitles, but a good English subtitle file has been provided by Yours Truly and is available from opensubtitles.org. Another film for which I recently wrote an English subtitle file is the lovely Cerf-volant du bout du monde. Again, a beautiful restoration of the film has been released on blu-ray, and is well worth it. I could go on forever, so I must just arbitrarily stop.
