Let's reword "How much freedom do you really need" into "How much freedom do you really want" if you already have the privilege of having whatever you want at your fingertips? I'm not saying that kids don't "need" freedom... they certainly deserve freedom, but the real question is how do you make people see that on the political level if there's no pressing case for it? Kids shut up in their rooms playing video games, shut off from the world (and increasingly shut off from social media) to protect them from the pervs... It's every protectionist's dream come true. You can't fight that with name-calling and throwing out terms like "adultism" or "neocolonialism." "As if material "wealth" could replace human contact? As if running free (to explore the ADVENTURE of life) could be replaced by ...er...iphones..." I never said it could be. What I was saying was that most adults would make that trade-off when deciding what kind of world children should live in. There's a difference between describing the problem and justifying it. Some obvious solutions are the free range kids movement. There are a minority of parents who see the value of kids running free despite all the imaginary dangers. They've had some successes, but I don't think they got anywhere by playing the discrimination game.
