Bruce Willis said in one interview that he was not leading, he followed Haley and reacted to him. The twist is not Haley seeing dead people, but the fate of Bruce Willis character. When you see the movie again, watch out and look how close they come - they never interact physically, they only exchange words. If you see it the second time, you notice all the hints that one was oblivious to the first time. It was a master piece.
