I was on a flight once to Taipei or Singapore with a continuation to Bangkok and from there to Mumbai. It was back in the days when you could actually have a 747 less than 1/3 full (frequently true of flagship carriers at the time), which was always luxurious, although I had a biz-class seat, anyway. I met this twelve-year-old Pakistani boy - who was stunning - in the gate and it immediately became apparent that he was oh-so-ready to have fun. It was as clear as could possibly be. His father became a problem, however, not because he was paranoid but because he wanted me to come to Pakistan to visit them and (what else?) become his business partner. This is a very frequent problem when traveling in Asia, i.e. boys' families. Not because they're hostile but because they want to monopolize your time with questionable business proposals. Each of us, him, his kid and me, had our own private rows because the plane was so empty. I don't remember if the kid joined me in biz class or if I went back to economy, but we ended up hanging out for some hours - until he took off his shoes! His feet smelled so bad! How can people not bathe their kids before a flight? Of course, I wouldn't have done anything on a plane anyway but a less circumspect person could well have done it (one who could stomach bad foot odor), especially considering how few people were on the plane. |
