I have a different take on it.

The younger boy is counting to 100 but stops when a gunshot occurs. That is when the older brother kills the father.

They mention that the mother left before, apparently because of the father.

The older boy mentions that the father cannot hurt them anymore.

The older boy calls the police to confess to killing the father.

The police arrive and seperate the brothers since the older boy committed the crime.

Moral of the story: If you are going to beat up your kids, keep your guns away from them.
