"having children is a huge responsibility. It takes time away from things like education" This is where things get complicated. I do agree about abolishing child labor laws, but without an education they'd only qualify for low-skilled labor which is another thing they want to protect children from even though a lot of low-skilled jobs aren't as dangerous as they were in the past. And, of course, more jobs than ever before require an education. I suppose that may be part of the reason that becoming a social media influencer has become such a popular alternative for children to aspire to. But the extension of childhood is happening on multiple fronts for many material reasons, so I think a term like "adultism" which casts it as simply a matter of age-based discrimination misses the mark. Yes, children need their freedom (that is to say political freedom), but the affluence that such freedom produces has a way of circling back and undercutting that need. How much freedom do you really need if you have the privilege of having whatever you want at your fingertips? Not that there's anything wrong with having such material comforts, but these conveniences skew the balancing act between freedom and safety such that freedom seems less essential. ![]() |
