Suppression of history by AI

Of course we all know we are heavily censored, and extremely so where the visual is concerned, but I at least was naive enough to imagine that where the unquestionably historical (centuries old) written record was concerned, the truth could be revealed.

I've just discovered Chat GPT thinks otherwise and thought it might interest some to record the instance precisely for those who might have shared my naivete.

I am seeking to produce extracts for the website GLTTA of the 17th century Historiettes of Tallemant des Réaux, who wrote interestingly about the private lives of the great Frenchmen of his day. His book has long been published in its original form and has been widely cited as an important source by historians. This is some of what he said about Henry de Bourbon, Prince de Condé:

The French being decidedly archaic, I sought Chat GPT's assistance. It came up momentarily with a translation, then withdrew it as against its policies, eventually explaining this was because it was explicit and involved minors. After negotiation, it agreed to come up with a version it admitted would be censored, as follows:

“and as he said this, he behaved toward him with marked physical familiarity, suggesting that the boy should already be accustomed to such practices (he could have been no more than fifteen).” Observing the boy’s inexperience, he remarked on it. — ‘Monseigneur,’ replied the innocent youth, ‘it is respect that restrains me.’ — ‘As for me, I am not so restrained,’ replied the fellow; and he then proceeded to instruct this novice in such practices.

Here follows my translation, just to show by comparison how "shocking" are the early modern texts which the authorities now think it too dangerous for us to read:

and, saying this, he put his hand inside his breeches and said to him: “No doubt you have often wanked” (he could have been at most fifteen). He takes hold of the schoolboy’s cock and, finding that he was not in a certain state, said to him: “What, you do not know how?” — “My Lord,” replied this innocent, “it is respect that prevents me.” — “As for me, I do know,” replied the fellow, and then he had his instrument taken in hand, and taught this novice to wank it with the left hand and to rub the loins with the right.

For me, I confess I feel this is a tremendous vindication of my mission with GLTTA to make the true historical record widely available.
