phenotype is the physical expression of genotype. Male genotype ( generally) does not produce enough estrogen to grow breasts. If I then take a whole load of estrogen, can I then claim that its an expression of my genotype? One example of phenotype is height, and your height can vary depending on nutrition etc, but I imagine that it can only vary between parameters set out in your genotype. If I have some hormonal imbalance when Im growing up and end up 7 ft tall when im 13, is that also an expression of my genotype? I guess you could argue that the hormonal imbalance comes from my genes and so is an expression of genotype. Or eye color. Eye color is an expression of genotype. If I put colored contact lenses in, have I then changed my phenotype? I suppose Im not convinced that taking lots of drugs, chopping bits of your body off, and wearing a dress allows you to claim a female phenotype. |
