Where is Benjamin Britten when we need him?

He might have made an opera out of, um, current events, although he would probably have had to have followed through on the original plan to have him study with Berg.

(One of the more amusing might-have-beens in music history: plans had indeed been laid for the teenage Britten to study with Berg. Anti-modernists whispered to Britten's mother that there was something not quite right about Berg. She thought they meant that the resolutely heterosexual Berg was a fag and the plans came to nought, alas. One does salivate at the thought of some sort of mixture of Peter Grimes, TOTS, Wozzeck and Lulu centering on the Tyler/Lance romance.)
