We & the chimps have a distant and mysterious common ancestor from whom we all "descend." The important point is that qualitative cognitive differences between humans and even closely related primates makes it clear that our differentiation from them can be both vast and subtle at the same time. Nothing prevents prevents us from inferring from facts concerning mammalian instinctual tendencies in evolutionary terms, but neither are we reducible to our lineage. But do make sure to get the current understanding evolutionary history right -- as provisionally understood as it may be. |
