As if that was what any of it was about. And the govt at the time was labor, their "own side", so why were they against centralised authority?

You are contradicting yourself.

The 70s were underpinned by a generous welfare state, social housing at cheap rents, etc.

But they were also resistance to centralised authority

You cant have both. If the 70s were so great and provided the things you mention, then there would be no need for resistance to centralised authority, because it was the centralised authority( labor govt) that was providing those things.
