The US is arguably less adultist than other western countries. Like, it doesn't have a true age limit on social media like Australia does (though it will come into effect on 10 December 2025). And COPPA's age limit is 13, while OSASMMA's is 16. The EU's GDPR's default age limit is also 16, and member states get to choose an age limit between 13 and 16 inclusive. Then there's also its allowing of child marriage. And the fact that fake child porn isn't covered by the same laws as real child porn. It also doesn't prohibit porn of young elves and pixies like New Zealand, or textual child "porn" like Canada. At the same time, the US is more adultist in other ways, like the drinking age and age limits on political positions. And it treats criminals more harshly, with the death penalty, longer prison sentences, felony disenfranchisement, public sex offender registry, etc. I feel like it's English-speaking countries like the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand which are the most sexually adultist. At least French-speakers sometimes call child sex offenders "pédocriminels" rather than "pédophiles". |
