You can try to make a distinction between govt stealing and other people stealing, but its a flimsy one. I don't think it's a flimsy one at all. When the government "steals" from me via taxation, I know how much they will steal, I know when they will still it, I allow them to steal it, and it uses the money it stole to provide unique services which benefit me. I also have a say in whether or not I am stolen from and what the money will be used for, since I voted in democratic elections for the people that are stealing from me. None of these things are true of, say, someone robbing my house, and I think they provide a clear distinction between taxation and theft as we generally think of it. |
