BL is not just "connected with politics" -- it IS politics. The interest of older and younger males in each other -- erotic interest and otherwise -- is simply part of the human condition; indeed right at the core thereof. It was just the way things were. But then it became an "issue." It acquired labels, got talked about, and was hedged about with restrictions and conventions. i.e., it became politics. So yes, it's politics. (One of Gore Vidal's most brilliant essays makes precisely this point: "Sex is politics".) You understand this of course but many don't see it.
