I’ve seen pretty much everything else Noel has made. It’s hard for me to compare THE HOLE IN THE FENCE to anything he directed, mainly because the tone of Ivan Noel’s movies (most of the time) tends to be far more dreamy and wistful while THE HOLE IN THE FENCE, save for the scene of the 2 boys swimming nude, felt distinctly sinister. I tend to prefer movies that play with ambiguity rather than tell you how to feel, but that’s not to say that I don’t love a good scary story. It’s just, to me at least, the horror of THE HOLE IN THE FENCE feels like it has more to do with how the audience is supposed to interpret what’s happening rather than much of what’s actually happening. Like the last shot for example was completely ridiculous. How there’s a bucket in the pile of dirt that obviously has something underneath it, yet nobody is looking under it and instead just puttering around it like it’s nothing. Like, to me, it felt like the director was like, “oh man for this last shot the audience needs to be anticipating something that doesn’t happen and then they’ll yell and say what???” and I couldn’t help but feel more annoyed because of how obvious it all was.

Not a bad movie, but not a brave one either.
